El más reciente número de Razón y Palabra, la primer revista electrónica en América Latina especializada en comunicación, trae un muy buen artículo de Octavio Islas donde comparte los principales indicadores de Internet para México y algunos para Latinoamérica. El artículo recopila cifras de diversas fuentes de información, como son eMarketer, la AMIPCI, INEGI, McCann, entre otras. Lo primero en destacar es que, según eMarketer, México ocupó el año pasado la posición número 10 en el ranking de mayor número de usuarios, con un total de 27.4 millones de usuarios, y estimando que para el año 2012 la cifra crecerá hasta 43 millones. En cuanto a los indicadores sociodemográficos destaca, entre otras cosas, que “la tasa de penetración de Internet en personas mayores de 6 años fue estimada en 25.6% El 56% de los usuarios de Internet son hombres y 44% mujeres.” En otros temas, y según el INEGI “Los usuarios de Internet en México ubicaron sitios “fuera de casa” como el principal punto de conexión a Internet (65.9 por ciento), y “el hogar” (34.1 por ciento). “ Hablando de redes sociales, según McCann “El número de mexicanos que se estima participaban en 2008 en redes sociales ascendía a 5.1 Seguir leyendo

The threat against Net Neutrality
Net Neutrality has ruled the Internet since its creation and it’s understood as “the principle that Internet users should be in control of what content they view and what applications they use on the Internet“. In other words, it is about equal access to the Internet. Not only in the US, but in Europe, there has been a lot of activity regarding the intention of telecommunications companies (carriers) to take control over the content that is transmitted through their networks. Companies that have made their way based on Net Neutrality -such as Google, Amazon or e-Bay- are against this intention, and have joined with others to conform the Open Internet Coalition with the aim to protect an open Internet where everyone can access what they want when they want. Artists such as Moby and REM have also joined the cause through Save the Internet, another coalition that has the same purpose of maintaining the freedom over the Internet.
